Safety: Crane System

Comprehensive and fully integrated Crane Safety System

Babcock’s plant hire business operates a fleet of 144 mobile cranes, ranging from 10 - 600 tons, throughout Southern Africa. These cranes can be found working in critical and high-risk environments, including mines, petrochemical and power plants.

In order to protect our cranes, customer’s assets, and the well-being of our people, Babcock has developed a comprehensive and fully integrated Crane Safety System, the only one in South Africa, and as far as we know - the world.

The system allows for real time, online reporting of crane and operator information via a handheld device. In addition to telemetry, performance and other fleet benefits, the safe operation of these cranes is maintained via a series of critical checks that must be performed by the operator for the Crane Safety System to allow the crane to start operating.

These pre-operation inspections include:

•Crane and equipment condition and function

•Validity of licences and test certificates of staff and equipment

•       Information for the safe system of work

Babcock and the customer have sight of all information and messages on various devices including smart phone, tablet, laptop or PC. If a High Priority Alert is reported, the responsible Babcock manager can contact the operator, establish what the problem is and if required, remotely switch the crane off to prevent an accident.

This crane safety system provides assurance, to Babcock and its customers, that all Legal, Babcock and other critical requirements related to the mobile crane and its operator, meet stringent criteria in order to ensure everyone goes home safe every day.
