Sometimes the smartest safety solutions are also the simplest. At our Isando branch, one small idea with a surprisingly strong pull has earned Tsietsi, Sales Representative, the title of Babcock Africa Safety Star for May 2026.
His solution? A magnetic sweeping tool designed to collect loose rivets, bolts, screws and metal fragments from workshop floors and surrounding outdoor areas before they become a hazard.
And yes - it’s basically a giant magnet on wheels.
While the idea may sound simple, the impact has been significant. Loose metal objects in workshop environments can easily lead to slips, trips, puncture wounds, tyre damage and equipment risks. Traditional sweeping methods often miss smaller metal fragments, especially in busy operational areas.
Tsietsi recognised the risk and proposed a smarter way to tackle it. The magnetic tool now helps teams remove metal debris faster, more effectively and with far less physical strain, improving both safety and housekeeping standards across the site.
What makes the story stand out is not just the tool itself, but the mindset behind it. Without being prompted, Tsietsi identified a common workplace issue, thought differently about the solution, and took ownership of improving the environment for everyone around him. It’s a practical example of living our principle of Think: Outcomes - finding better, safer and more effective ways of working, even in everyday tasks.
In many ways, the idea reflects what strong safety cultures are built on: observation, curiosity and action. Because sometimes preventing injuries doesn’t require a major system overhaul. Sometimes, it just takes someone noticing the problem - and bringing a little magnetic attraction to the workshop floor.
Congratulations to Tsietsi on being recognised as a Babcock Africa Safety Star for May 2026.
