Fleet Replacement Program
In a significant fleet replacement program, a major mining contractor is set to receive a substantial order of Volvo A60H articulated dump trucks (ADTs) and EC950E excavators. As one of the first customers in South Africa to acquire this combination, the client has been impressed by the reliability, productivity, and efficiency of these machines.
Successful Launch and Market Presence
Since their launch in southern Africa in 2017, the 55-tonne Volvo A60H, the largest fully articulated hauler globally, and the 90-ton EC950E, the largest crawler excavator in Volvo Construction Equipment's range, have gained immense popularity. Currently, around 260 A60H and 75 EC950E units are operational, with some major fleets in South Africa and Namibia, according to David Vaughan, Managing Director of Babcock's Equipment business.
New Order Details
The client has ordered 48 A60H and 12 EC950E units to complement their existing fleet of 62 A60H and 21 EC950E units, making it one of the largest A60H fleets locally. The new machines will be delivered over six months as part of a replacement program, with some existing A60H units having clocked 30,000 hours and most EC950E units exceeding 20,000 hours.
Proven Capabilities in Heavy Hauling
The decision to order these machines stems from their proven capabilities in heavy hauling applications at high-production mine sites. The A60H's 55-ton payload capacity makes it the preferred solution for the contractor, replacing existing 60-ton rigid haulers. Vaughan notes, “The A60H not only meets the production capacity but also excels in various weather conditions, while rigid haulers often struggle.”
Productivity and Efficiency Enhancements
The A60H enhances productivity with a 34 m³ capacity, delivering up to 40% more productivity compared to the previous A40G model. It is powered by a 16-liter D16 Volvo engine, providing 382 kW of power and 495 Nm of torque. Designed with serviceability in mind, it features a front grill that swings down for access and systems to improve uptime.
Ideal Loading Tool: The EC950E
The EC950E serves as the ideal loading tool for the A60H, designed to load it cost-effectively with five to six passes per load. It boasts over 424 kN of breakout force and is powered by the same Volvo D16 engine as the A60H, enhancing parts’ commonality. Its advanced hydraulic system optimizes efficiency and reduces losses, contributing to greater fuel economy.
Service and Maintenance Excellence
To maximize the performance of these Volvo machines, the customer maintains a rigorous service regime through a service contract with Babcock. This partnership not only saves costs by avoiding unexpected repairs but also ensures access to the latest product improvements. By utilizing Volvo genuine parts and approved oils, Babcock guarantees that the machines operate at peak performance, enhancing their longevity.
