Thursday, July 9, 2026: Today, at Babcock’s Jet Park in Boksburg, Johannesburg, Babcock launched its new role as the preferred partner of Lincoln Electric welding products across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Hendrik du Toit, MD for Plant Services at Babcock, outlines how the partnership will strengthen product availability, technical support and specialist welding capability for customers across the region.
Babcock is now the preferred partner of Lincoln Electric welding products in South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). From now on, the company will directly import and carry a comprehensive range of Lincoln Electric welding and cutting inverters, consumables, PPE and welder generators for sale and redistribution throughout the region.
The key objective, according to Hendrik du Toit, MD - Plant Services at Babcock, is to improve product availability for local and regional customers, while making the premium Lincoln Electric range more accessible, affordable and backed by expert local support.
"Our partnership with Lincoln Electric is strengthened by the practical experience gained through Babcock's engineering operations, where Lincoln Electric products are used extensively on high-integrity welding, maintenance and repair projects supporting power generation, boiler and pressure-part maintenance, petrochemical facilities and other heavy industrial applications," says du Toit. "Because we rely on these products ourselves in some of Africa's most demanding operating environments, we are able to offer customers practical expertise, trusted technical support and premium welding solutions that deliver proven performance and long-term value."
“Across our equipment hire division, we have also relied on Lincoln Electric welding machines and generator sets for many years on construction, maintenance and shutdown projects, particularly the Lincoln Vantage welder generators. That firsthand experience has enabled us to build deep technical knowledge of the equipment, supported by comprehensive service, repair and aftermarket capabilities."
Strong service and after‑sales support
Beyond supplying Lincoln Electric products, Babcock provides customers with comprehensive technical support throughout the equipment lifecycle.
To help customers maximise performance and productivity, Babcock has established a dedicated Welding Solutions Centre where customers and channel partners can receive product training, participate in live equipment demonstrations, develop welding procedures and test Lincoln Electric equipment on their own applications. Experienced welding specialists are also available to conduct demonstrations and technical support at customer sites where required.
“To strengthen customer support across the region, Babcock is expanding its branch network throughout South Africa while extending its reach through established operations in Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. The company also plans to appoint additional authorised agents in strategically selected markets across Sub-Saharan Africa,” says Du Toit.
Supporting these capabilities is Babcock's authorised Lincoln Electric field service and repair centre, which has more than 60 years of experience servicing welding equipment. Technicians receive annual factory training on the latest Lincoln Electric technologies, while the facility offers equipment calibration, diagnostic testing, safety inspections, load testing and a comprehensive spare parts inventory for much of the Lincoln Electric product range.
Product range and reach
Lincoln Electric's portfolio includes a comprehensive range of welding consumables and equipment suited to applications ranging from routine maintenance through to demanding heavy industrial fabrication.
Among the most widely specified consumables for pipeline construction across Africa are the Pipeliner® welding electrodes, together with Innershield® self-shielded and UltraCore® gas-shielded flux-cored wires. These are frequently paired with the rugged Lincoln Electric Vantage® engine-driven welder, a proven solution for remote site work and harsh operating conditions. Babcock stocks and supplies consumables tested to Sasol and Eskom specifications, ensuring they meet the stringent quality and compliance requirements of South Africa's energy and petrochemical sectors.
The Power Wave® range of heavy-duty multi-process welding machines offers advanced waveform technologies and premium arc performance for industrial fabrication, and the Lincoln Flextec® range is recommended for heavy structural and outdoor environments.
To meet the needs of a broader customer base, Babcock also offers cost-effective industrial solutions such as the Powertec® range and the single-phase Speedtec® multi-process welders.
Completing the portfolio are competitively priced Lincoln Electric MMA welding machines for general fabrication and maintenance, alongside the rugged Invertec® series trusted for general workshop and field maintenance applications where reliability and portability are essential.
A reliable supply pipeline
"Our preferred partnership with Lincoln Electric is about more than distributing world-class welding products," says du Toit. "It is about creating a dependable supply pipeline into South Africa and the broader sub-Saharan African region, ensuring that the critical welding equipment and consumables our industries rely on are readily available, competitively priced and supported by local technical expertise."
"We know the value the Lincoln Electric brand brings because we use these products extensively across our own engineering operations. That firsthand experience, combined with our investment in local stockholding, technical capability and after-sales support, enables us to provide customers with a level of service and expertise that extends well beyond the point of sale."
"Babcock operates an open-door approach. Whether customers need help selecting the right welding solution, resolving a technical challenge, responding to an equipment breakdown, training welders or improving the productivity and efficiency of their welding operations, our specialists are ready to assist."
