On 1 December 2017, the first graduates of the Babcock Disability Learnership Programme will be offered permanent employment, having successfully completed the four-year learnership. The Babcock Disability Learnership Programme was launched in May 2014 in collaboration with disability specialists, Progression, with the aim of integrating individuals with disabilities into Babcock’s employee pool.
The programme was designed to provide learners with training, work experience, on-the-job knowledge and mentoring to enable them to become skilled, contributing members of Babcock’s workforce.
The programme is executed across four phases:
- Phase 1 & 2 – foundational
- Phase 3 – specialisation
- Phase 4 – behavioural
In Phase 1 and 2, learners are introduced to the working world and learn basic business administration skills. The learners are required to complete two qualifications in the first two years of the programme:
- Learnership - 67465 National Certificate Business Administration NQF 3
- Learnership - 61595 Further Education and Training Certificate: Business Administration Services NQF 4
In Phase 3, learners can specialise in a field that they have been working on for the last two years.
Phase 4 comes into effect after the learner has completed the specialised qualification in Phase 3 and has been offered employment with Babcock. This phase aims to provide learners skills to cope in the working world during the transition from learner to employee through a guided programme called ‘Self Leadership Coaching’.
Congratulations to Colin, Kutlwano and Maokanyane who were our inaugural members of the learnership. Colin and Kutlwano will be employed by Babcock’s Generation division, while Maokanyane will be working in the Transport division. We would also like to extend our thanks to those who worked alongside the three learners respectively as mentors for the duration of the learnership.
We currently have 13 more learners in various phases of the programme.
