Now available in southern Africa through Babcock, the new generation Volvo wheel loaders –comprising the L150, L180 and L220 – drive customer profitability by combining faster cycle times, enhanced productivity, fuel efficiency and intelligent, operator-focused technologies.
Following the recent rollout of several new products from its principal, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), Babcock is building on a landmark year of product renewals with the southern African introduction of the new generation Volvo wheel loaders. Designed to meet the evolving needs of customers across construction, quarrying, mining and material handling applications, the first units arrived in South Africa during the first quarter of 2026.
While the first wave of the global rollout of the new generation Volvo wheel loader range comprises five models – the L150, L180, L200 High Lift, L220 and L260 – Babcock is initially bringing three production models to the local market. These include the L150, L180 and L220, confirms Quintin O’Reilly, Head of Sales at Babcock’s Equipment business. The revamped range replaces the previous Volvo 150H, 180H and 220H – models that enjoyed a high uptake in southern Africa.
The new generation Volvo wheel loaders, says O’Reilly, have already been well received in the local market, with market leading technology, operator safety and comfort, productivity and fuel efficiency driving interest among customers in southern Africa. Above all, he adds, the new range is a competitively priced premium Volvo offering.
“Apart from the fresh design, these machines offer even faster cycle times, greater performance and unmatched operator comfort. They are also packed with intelligent solutions to help customers maximise productivity, efficiency and ultimately profitability,” says O’Reilly.
Efficiency to the fore
Central to the efficiency of the new generation Volvo wheel loader range is an entirely Volvo powertrain, which delivers optimal stability and efficiency by synchronising the transmission with the engine and axles.
The converter offers increased torque output for better performance at low speeds, while reduced gear step intervals provide faster acceleration and smoother operation. Technologies such as Volvo OptiShift and Reverse By Braking also decrease cycle times and extend component lifespan.
To support robust performance in demanding applications, the unique Volvo Torque Parallel linkage delivers high breakout torque and ultimate parallel movement throughout the entire lifting range.
Smart Control, a fuel-efficient engine mode, is now activated by default when the machine turns on, lowering fuel consumption by up to 4% without compromising productivity. The new loaders are also compatible with HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), which significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional diesel models.
Optimal productivity
When designing the new generation range of wheel loaders, Volvo CE paid particular attention to optimal productivity. The introduction of new generation load-sensing hydraulics enables faster cycle times by ensuring attachment responsiveness and improving boom lift and lowering speeds.
An automatic bucket levelling function further boosts productivity by returning the bucket to a level position from both dump and curl positions, while the intelligent Auto Bucket Fill feature delivers optimal, consistent bucket-filling every time.
Customers can get even more out of their machines by pairing with digital solutions such as Load Assist with On-Board weighing for real-time load data, Operator Coaching and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.
The new Load Ticket solution streamlines invoicing for wheel loader operators by digitalising the flow from machine to the office, while Site Operations helps manage mixed-fleet job sites. In addition, Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system offers 24/7 monitoring to reduce repair costs and maximise uptime.
Operator comfort
The design of the new generation range places a high value on operator comfort. According to O’Reilly, operator comfort directly increases productivity and safety by reducing fatigue, allowing operators to maintain high alertness over long shifts. Key benefits include improved accuracy, faster cycle times, enhanced safety via better visibility and better operator retention.
Beyond their sleek modern design, the revamped cabs set new benchmarks for comfort and functionality. The new 12,8-inch Volvo Co-Pilot touchscreen, which is 20% larger than the prior version, can display up to four widgets at a time, offering intuitive control over key functions such as media, camera settings, climate control and machine status. Alongside the dynamic instrument cluster, which is ideally positioned in front of the steering wheel, these features keep operators informed and focused on the task at hand.
The new range boasts what is said to be one of the most comfortable and quietest wheel loader cabs on the market. Enhancements include improved storage options, new armrests, cupholders, USB chargers and a variety of seating choices, including premium seats with heating and cooling functionality. The optional Comfort Drive Control (CDC) system allows operators to steer using a single, ergonomic level, reducing fatigue over long shifts and promoting productivity.
Safety matters
The new Volvo wheel loader has a special design focus on safety. In-cab visibility is enhanced with new optional safety features such as Volvo Smart View, which provides a 360° view of the machine’s surroundings via the Volvo Co-Pilot, and the updated Collision Mitigation System, which detects and alerts operators to obstacles when reversing from speeds as low as 0,5 kmph.
Orange handrails and steps ensure safe access, automatic door-opening adds convenience and improves safety, enhanced lighting improves visibility and a flashing beacon within the grille provides clear indication of reversing for bystanders.
Loading uptime
During the design of the new generation wheel loader range, Volvo CE cast the spotlight on ease of service. Serviceability, says O’Reilly, directly increases equipment uptime by reducing the time required for repairs and maintenance. When equipment is designed for easy access, technicians can diagnose faults faster, replace components more quickly, and perform routine maintenance without disrupting production schedules.
The updated Volvo wheel loaders are designed for durability and straightforward servicing to maximise uptime. The tilting cab to either a 30° or 60° angle (or 70° for the larger models) allows easy access, while a work light is conveniently located under the grille to make refuelling safer.
Brake wear indicators, located on the wheels, provide easy brake condition checks, and a new service platform and harness anchor points outside the cab provide safe and easy access for routine maintenance and cleaning.
Aftermarket support
A good piece of equipment, continues O’Reilly, is only as good as the aftermarket support behind it. The new generation Volvo wheel loaders benefit from Babcock’s unparalleled support service – a strategic partnership model focused on maximising vehicle uptime, operational predictability and total cost of ownership (TCO). This is achieved through high-capacity branch facilities across all the major mining hubs, advanced digital monitoring and structured maintenance programmes.
Smarter finance for faster returns
To further strengthen the investment case, Babcock is currently offering Prime –2% finance support through Volvo Financial Services on selected Volvo wheel loaders. This limited offer helps reduce monthly instalments, making it easier for customers to access premium Volvo equipment while improving affordability, protecting cash flow and accelerating return on investment. For operations focused on lowering monthly cost without compromising on performance, it provides a practical way to bring new generation wheel loaders into the fleet sooner.
