Babcock carried out the redesign of a full main steam system at Matimba Power Station, replacing X20 with P91, where the team re-engineered the plant using 3D scanning technology that allowed for the complete detailed fabrication drawings, calculations and stress analysis to be generated in under three months. This is the first full system replacement for Eskom on a main steam system.
During the design, the integration of engineering, fabrication, transport and erection enabled Babcock to configure the system using concurrent engineering principles. The result was an economical and technically compliant offering, with short lead times and minimised plant downtime.
The actual replacement time for the mainsteam system, including support systems was 90 days during a normal General Overhaul Cycle.
Interesting fact:
To fully capture the main steam system and surrounding plant, Babcock performed more than 200 individual scans, generating a total of 10 360 files.
