Access to education remains one of the most powerful ways to create long-term opportunity. Yet for many capable young South Africans, financial barriers and limited support can prevent them from reaching their full potential. Through its long-standing partnership with the St Dunstan’s Foundation, Babcock Africa is helping change that trajectory by supporting learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to access quality education and progress toward tertiary study and meaningful careers. Supporting access through partnership For more than a decade, Babcock has supported the St Dunstan’s Foundation as part of its commitment to responsible corporate citizenship and skills development. The partnership focuses on enabling access to education through structured support that helps learners complete their studies. This support includes assistance with tuition, transport and academic guidance, helping remove practical barriers that often prevent talented students from continuing their education journey. As Don Jones, Director of the St Dunstan’s Foundation, explains: “The vision of the Foundation was to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in accessing a strong holistic education that equips them for tertiary studies and meaningful careers.” Real impact beyond the classroom The impact of the partnership can be seen in the progress of learners who have gone on to pursue tertiary education and professional careers. Students supported through the programme have progressed into fields such as medicine and law, while others have achieved financial independence and now support their families — demonstrating how education access can change individual lives and family futures. Investing in future skills For Babcock, supporting education initiatives is closely linked to the sustainability of engineering, technical and industrial sectors. Investing in education today helps develop the skilled workforce needed to support critical infrastructure in the future. Ashley Craft, Transformation Manager at Babcock Africa, says the partnership reflects this long-term view: “Education access and skills development are long-term investments. By supporting structured pathways into tertiary and vocational study, we are contributing to sustainable opportunity in South Africa.”
