Innovation in Safety – Mark Named Safety Star for September 2025
Mark is recognised for his exceptional commitment to safety and innovation, addressing one of the most critical risks faced during heavy equipment servicing: “caught-between” injuries.
For mechanics working on Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs), accessing the engine requires lifting the bonnet, supported by a hydraulic cylinder. While manufacturers such as Volvo state that the bonnet cannot close unexpectedly, mining operations remain cautious, identifying this as a potential risk.
His innovation went beyond a single fix. By standardising the design, all new generation ADTs are now delivered with the updated bonnet lock—meeting client safety expectations and aligning with the strict requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
Mark’s solution reflects the Babcock commitment of “Think Outcomes.” By identifying a hazard, creating a practical engineering fix, and embedding it into standard practice, he has delivered long-term safety value for both Babcock and the mining industry.
