Kea credits Mentor Match for increased confidence and purpose

Through the launch of Mentor Match, Babcock has set the standard for mentoring in the workplace. Kea Tlhapane, Environmental Lead at Babcock, has strongly commended the programme for its transformative impact on career development, leadership advancement and confidence building for women in the workplace.

As part of its Illuminate programme, Babcock’s Global Women’s Scheme - a dedicated development initiative designed to support and accelerate the careers of women - the company launched the Mentor Match scheme to provide opportunities for growth, connection and empowerment. Through the initiative, participants are paired with mentors who provide one-on-one guidance and support their professional development.

Babcock has identified mentorship as one of the strategic pillars to achieving its target to have a 30% female representation across all levels of the business by 2030, and the Mentor Match programme is designed to drive progress toward this commitment. The focus is on providing guidance from experienced professionals to help mentees navigate their careers, develop new skills and tackle challenges.

Confidence and Purpose

Selected to be part of the inaugural cohort, Kea has found the Mentor Match programme to be crucial for fostering confidence in women in the workplace. In fact, she believes that this is the best developmental programme she has ever attended.

By providing tailored guidance, successful role models and enhanced networking opportunities, the programme enables women to navigate complex professional environments, advocate for themselves and pursue leadership roles.

“The programme provided a platform for women from different backgrounds to come together, share their experiences and empower each other,” says Kea. “It reinforced self-consciousness and the need to speak positively about who we are.”

Leadership skills

In addition to boosting self-confidence, Kea has found the programme to be a catalyst for career advancement. “The programme fosters knowledge transfer and improves leadership skills. I have received tailored guidance on my career path and the roadmap to achieving specific professional goals,” she says.

Kea commends the programme for honing soft skills such as communication by providing a structured, safe environment for regular dialogue, active listening and constructive feedback. The programme enables mentees to articulate ideas, navigate complex workplace dynamics and develop emotional intelligence.

“I have learnt to structure my thoughts and to be concise. It is always important to be clear about what is expected, especially given that vague communication can sometimes lead to misinterpretations. I have also grasped the art of active listening, ensuring that I fully understand perspectives before responding, rather than just waiting to speak. I have also learned not to let my emotions influence my responses when I disagree with something,” explains Kea.

Setting the benchmark

Through Illuminate, Babcock’s mission is to create opportunities for women to allow them to fulfil their potential. The programme is part of Babcock’s broader effort to foster a more inclusive and diverse workforce.

Mentor Match, part of the larger Illuminate programme, therefore sets the benchmark for mentorship in the workplace. The programme provides a tiered approach to mentor training, making it affordable and accessible to all.
