A day in the life of a diesel mechanic - Eckhard
From apprentice to qualified diesel mechanic
After completing a four-year apprenticeship with Babcock, Eckhard has been employed by Babcock’s Equipment business as an earth-moving diesel mechanic for the last year. He is based in Steelpoort to provide support to Babcock’s customers in the region.
Tell us more about your apprenticeship
There are four phases, comprising of intensive training and on-the-job experience. I received a lot of on-the-job experience with qualified mechanics which exposed me to different environments and helped me gain experience of the trade. I carried out all duties from cleaning workshops to conducting diagnostics on machines. During my apprenticeship I worked on Volvo Penta generators, and Volvo, SDLG and Winget construction equipment.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I love being a diesel mechanic, especially working on powerful Volvo Construction Equipment machines that are durable and reliable. The Volvo Dump Truck is my favourite machine, which has accessible filters for safe and convenient servicing.
I value safety, and Babcock’s Safety Lens programme enables us to maximise customer service while ensuring that we return home safely every day. I am proud to work for a company that represents a premium brand such as Volvo which also places priority on safety – in fact, Volvo invented the three-point seat belt used today in all vehicles around the world to promote safety in our daily lives.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Outside my work place I enjoy cycling, swimming, hiking, and reading up on the latest Volvo products.
