Since taking over the exclusive distributorship of BULL backhoe loaders and skid steers in Southern Africa in July 2023, Babcock has focused heavily on sectors such as construction, quarrying, mining, and plant hire. Now, the company is making a clear push to grow BULL’s footprint in the agricultural sector through strategic partnerships with farming-focused sub-dealers.
Mark Senyard, Product Manager - BULL at Babcock, confirms that since assuming the distributorship nearly two years ago, about 120 BULL machines have been sold locally. While BULL has been present in agriculture since 2017 via previous suppliers, Babcock’s recent growth has mainly come from urban and industrial markets. The initial strategy focused on providing utility equipment to mining and quarry customers for tasks like housekeeping, trenching, and work in confined spaces such as under conveyors.
“Our initial growth leveraged our existing customer base in construction, plant hire, mining and quarrying,” Senyard explains. “To unlock the next wave of growth, we see agriculture as a key market.”
To ensure farmers receive proper support, Babcock is appointing sub-dealers with strong agricultural expertise in major farming regions. Tractor Giants / Giant Equipment, a well-established South African farming equipment dealer, is the first such appointment, signaling Babcock’s commitment to the sector.
Why BULL Backhoe and Skid Steer Loaders Matter to Farmers
Backhoe and skid steer loaders are considered indispensable on farms for their versatility and ability to tackle diverse tasks efficiently. The backhoe loader’s front bucket handles material loading - soil, manure, feed, hay - while the backhoe arm performs digging, trenching for irrigation, and hole digging for planting.
“Farmers appreciate how these machines save time and labour by quickly switching between digging and loading,” says Senyard.
Babcock currently offers three BULL backhoe loader models: the HD76, HD96, and HD100, available in five variants. The HD76 is only offered in a General Purpose (GP) configuration, while the HD96 and HD100 come in both GP and Multi-Purpose (MP) versions. The MP configuration includes a clamshell bucket, fold-over forks, and an extended dipper - features tailored to meet farming needs.
Built Tough for South African Conditions
BULL’s competitive edge lies in its world-class components and rugged construction. The HD76 and HD96 use proven Kiloskar engines, while the HD100 runs on a Perkins engine. Other high-quality components include Italian Carraro transmissions, Casappa pumps, Danfoss brakes, and AKG radiators.
The machines’ heavy-duty frames make them among the heaviest in their class. For instance, the HD96 GP weighs about 350 kg more than competing models, providing greater downforce and less wheel spin. This robustness allows BULL loaders to carry larger buckets - 1.26 m³ compared to the typical 1.1 m³—and achieve a higher dump height, facilitating faster loading of larger trucks. The HD76 model also delivers 15% more bucket breakout force than competitors, thanks to its powerful engine and superior hydraulics.
Skid Steers: Compact and Capable
Babcock also offers the BULL skid steer model AV490, suited for material handling, land clearing, and general farm maintenance. Its compact size and manoeuvrability allow easy navigation of tight farm spaces. Available in canopy and fully enclosed cab variants, the AV490 will soon include a high-flow pump option to support attachments like sweepers and augers, enhancing its versatility.
Looking Ahead
With strategic partnerships and a product range tailored to agricultural demands, Babcock is positioning BULL as a trusted, rugged, and efficient utility solution for Southern African farmers.
Mark Senyard concludes, “Expanding BULL’s presence in agriculture is a natural next step, and with the right dealer support and machine capabilities, we expect to see strong growth in this sector.”
