Inspiring future engineers and educators

Empowering South Africa’s STEM Talent Pipeline

Babcock proudly took part in the recent Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy Careers Day at St Stithians College - an annual event designed to connect aspiring learners with organisations committed to shaping the next generation of talent in South Africa.

For Babcock, this is far more than a calendar fixture. It’s a meaningful expression of our commitment to educational upliftment, skills development, and inclusive growth, aligned with the “Social” pillar of our ESG framework.

Students receive an introduction to advanced welding technology with the Lincoln Welding Simulator.

This year, our exhibition stand offered students an immersive, hands-on experience into the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Learners explored advanced welding techniques using a Lincoln Welding Simulator, engaged with a DAF truck display representing the backbone of South Africa’s logistics sector, and put their problem-solving skills to the test in an “Insanity Challenge”—a logic-based puzzle designed to promote critical thinking, teamwork and perseverance.

Our involvement with the Thandulwazi Academy is rooted in a shared purpose: to help close the opportunity gap for talented, under-resourced learners. Through initiatives like its Saturday School, mentorship programmes, and Careers Day, the Academy enables access to quality education and career exposure in high-demand fields.

Babcock’s contribution extends well beyond this event. We are long-term partners in two of Thandulwazi’s flagship development programmes:

  • The Intern-Teacher Training Programme supports young trainee educators—especially in STEM subjects—through formal training, mentorship, and practical classroom experience. By strengthening the teaching pipeline, we help improve outcomes at the source.

  • The School Leadership Programme equips principals with the skills and tools to lead their schools more effectively, creating centres of excellence within their communities.

In addition to these programmes, we’ve also provided essential classroom resources such as furniture, helping to create more functional and dignified learning spaces.

By showing up with technology, support and purpose, Babcock is proud to help inspire the engineers, educators, and problem-solvers of tomorrow - and to support the communities they will go on to strengthen.

Creating a safe and secure world, together.
