Babcock proudly congratulates Piet from our Isando branch, who has been awarded the Africa Safety Star for January 2026 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to workplace safety, wellbeing and continuous improvement.
Living the Babcock values of “Be Curious” and "Think Outcomes", Piet identified a practical opportunity to improve daily operations while actively looking out for the safety of his colleagues.
During routine cleaning activities, wet floors presented an ongoing slip risk and often required manual intervention to manage and dry affected areas. Recognising this hazard, Piet introduced the use of air coolers to dry floors more quickly and efficiently.
Previously, managing wet floors could involve unnecessary manual handling and awkward postures. By using air coolers, the drying process is faster, safer and far less physically demanding, helping to reduce the risk of lower back strain and other musculoskeletal injuries.
Beyond the practical benefits, Piet’s initiative reflects a strong commitment to “Be Kind.” His actions demonstrate what it means to be a brother’s and sister’s keeper — thinking beyond individual responsibilities to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of others.
Piet’s proactive mindset, genuine care for colleagues and willingness to improve existing practices have strengthened safety culture at the branch. His initiative has made the workplace safer, more efficient and more supportive, reinforcing a culture where continuous improvement is encouraged and celebrated.
Congratulations, Piet — your curiosity and kindness continue to make a meaningful difference.
