Rustenburg team win November Safety Star

Babcock is proud to recognise the Rustenburg team as the Africa Safety Star for November 2025, celebrating their commitment to safety and decisive action during a high-risk lifting operation.

While working alongside crane operators and a contractor to lift a crane boom using webbing slings and a secondary crane, the team heard a sudden tearing sound.

Realising that the slings may have been compromised, the team immediately exercised their Stop Work Authority, choosing safety over operational pressure. The lifting task was halted without hesitation and their concern was promptly reported to the Safety Department.

A joint investigation with the safety team confirmed that the slings were indeed damaged. Continuing with the lift would have posed a serious risk. Thanks to open communication and collective decision-making, the operation was suspended until safe and compliant lifting equipment could be sourced.

This proactive and courageous action prevented a potential incident and stands as a shining demonstration of Babcock’s “Home Safe Every Day” safety culture. By speaking up, working together and placing safety first, the Rustenburg team reinforced that every employee has the power—and responsibility—to act when something doesn’t look right.

For their professionalism, accountability and care for one another, the Rustenburg workshop team is proudly recognised as the Safety Star for November 2025. Their actions truly embody the spirit of our safety values and ensure that everyone goes home safe, every day.

Congratulations to the Rustenburg Team!
