Safety leadership in action

Babcock is proud to recognise Zac, Rigging Supervisor at Gourikwa Power Station in Mossel Bay, as the Africa Safety Star for March 2026.

During a planned lifting operation to install roof panels above a turbine unit, Zac and his rigging team demonstrated strong preparation and discipline, ensuring all equipment and checks were completed ahead of schedule. As work progressed, Zac remained vigilant, continuously monitoring site conditions and assessing potential risks.

As conditions moved outside safe lifting limits due to increasing wind and rain, Zac exercised his Stop Work Authority.

Putting safety ahead of schedule, he made the decisive call to halt the operation. He then led his team to safely stand down, secure the work area, and dismantle the lifting setup in a controlled and disciplined manner.

Zac’s actions reflect the very best of Babcock’s safety culture — the courage to speak up, the discipline to reassess risk in real time, and the leadership to act decisively when it matters most.

His intervention prevented a potentially serious incident and reinforces a simple but critical principle: no task is so urgent that it cannot be done safely.

For his leadership, professionalism and unwavering commitment to safety, Zac is a deserving recipient of the Africa Safety Star recognition.
