Babcock enhances ESG commitment through support of Brake and Tyre Watch Event

Babcock proudly sponsored and provided a truck for the FleetWatch Brake and Tyre Watch event held on May 22nd and 23rd, 2024, in eThekwini. This impactful event, aimed at improving road safety, brought together 71 delegates from the Road Traffic Inspectorate, Metro Police, SAPS, Harbour Police, and the Fire Department. The initiative fostered close cooperation between these departments, all united in their commitment to enhancing road safety.

Promoting road safety and sustainability

Day One: Theory Training at Riverside Hotel

The first day, hosted at the Riverside Hotel, involved intensive theory training sessions. The high turnout and active participation underscored the significance and relevance of the training. Delegates gained valuable insights into the latest road safety protocols and best practices.

Day Two: Practical Training at RTI Pinetown Testing Facility

On the second day, participants transitioned to the RTI Pinetown testing facility for hands-on training. They were able to see, touch, and hear about the faults discussed during the theoretical sessions, thereby reinforcing their learning. A highlight of the day was the inspection of a well-maintained DAF truck and trailer provided by Babcock, showcasing the gold standard for roadworthy vehicles.

Training Stations and Inspections

Participants were divided into teams and rotated through various training stations, including:

  • External Lights and Conspicuity Tape
  • Tyres
  • Fifth Wheel
  • Braking Systems
  • Pit Inspection

During the inspections, four trucks were pulled off the road and examined in the testing centre, resulting in three significant failures. This high failure rate highlighted the critical need for rigorous vehicle inspections and ongoing training to ensure road safety.

Babcock’s ESG Commitment

Babcock's involvement in this event underscores our commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. By promoting road safety and supporting sustainable practices in the transportation industry, we are dedicated to creating safer and more sustainable communities. Providing the DAF truck for practical training not only set a benchmark for roadworthiness but also demonstrated our proactive approach to corporate responsibility.
