Following his recent successful completion of the Babcock Graduate Program, mechanical engineer Obed Salman has hailed the training programme as a platform that gives young engineers the competence and confidence they need to thrive in the engineering world. This speaks directly to Babcock’s “Think: Outcomes” principle, which seeks to “measure success by the results we deliver and the positive impact we make”.
“This is a well-structured programme, which gives graduates the much-needed exposure to all business units and departments within Babcock,” says Salman. “As part of the two-year programme, I was based at a Sasol site in Sasolburg for six months, then at the fabrication facility for another six months and eventually the design environment for the last 12 months. In design, we were exposed to Systems and Projects, Process Engineering, Piping Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Draughting. After finishing the programme, I have become much more confident as an engineer.”
Salman believes the programme gives exposure to the real world. Getting work experience, he says, is the foundation to a successful career for young graduates. “Such an opportunity plays a crucial role in shaping one’s career and to develop the skills needed for career growth.”
Hailing from Pretoria, Salman is a proud father who enjoys road trips and getaways. He describes himself as an adventurous and bubbly person. Having successfully completed his engineering course at the Tshwane University of Technology, he started his career as a mechatronics engineer at the very same university in 2015. He later joined the National Research Foundation, before moving to Carab Tekniva. He joined Babcock as a draughtsman in 2017, before taking up a mechanical engineer role some five years later.
